Income Tax Return in Pakistan – Legal Obligation and Process
Filing an Income Tax Return is a legal responsibility for all individuals and entities who fall within the taxable income bracket in Pakistan. It is regulated under the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, and supervised by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The return serves as a declaration of a person’s or business’s income, deductions, assets, and tax liability for a specific tax year. Timely and accurate filing is essential not only for legal compliance but also for obtaining financial and civic benefits.
In Pakistan, every salaried individual, businessperson, company, Association of Persons (AOP), and non-resident with Pakistani-source income is required to file an annual tax return if their income exceeds the taxable threshold. The FBR announces the threshold each year, and failure to file a return may lead to penalties, legal notices, or disqualification from the Active Taxpayers List (ATL).
